The twin R-4360 prop & twin J-33 jet engined P4M was built as a high speed mine layer patrol bomber.  It was pressed into service as the Navy's first dedicated electronic spy plane during the cold war.  It would be later replaced by the A3D Skywarrior but not before Mercators were shot down by communist aircraft.  The last P4M was retired in 1960.  The P4M operated with VP-21, VW-2, VQ-1, VQ-2, VW-1 and VW-3.  104 pgs, 192 photos, 18 pgs of drawings.
